The Shadow Players

We are a group of young English language and literature graduates of the University of Hong Kong and the Chinese University of Hong Kong who have reached the finals and won acting awards in recent years at the Chinese Universities Shakespeare Festival. We came together in early 2012 looking for opportunities to perform and to put on drama workshops for Hong Kong secondary schools. With help from Professors David Parker and Julian Lamb of CUHK we formed the Shadow Players (incorporated October 2012) and held our first drama workshop, featuring an excerpt from Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, for more than 800 secondary school students in October 2012 at CUHK. In April 2013, we performed our first major drama production The Learned Ladies of Mid-levels, adapted from Molière’s Les Femmes Savantes, to five sell-out audiences at the Fringe Club; an abridged version of the play was also performed at two secondary schools. Learned Ladies went on to garner several nominations at the annual HKELD.com theatre awards, winning Best Supporting Actress. In June 2014, our second production The Government Inspector, adapted from the play by Nikolai Gogol, became another sell-out show at the Fringe. In addition to drama performances, we have organized several workshops and dramatic lectures at different secondary schools, and contributed to a weekly English column in Ming Pao for secondary school students.
