Classical Ballet training has become a staple amongst extra-curricular activities for Hong Kong youth – much to the credit of founders like Jean M. Wong who set up her school in Hong Kong in 1960. This artistic pursuit not only develops physique and poise – it also provides a foundation in arts appreciation, discipline and determination.
Each year, the Jean M. Wong School of Ballet stages a performance to showcase the achievements of its students and the participants of the Hong Kong International Summer Dance School (ISDS). Five guest international choreographers, Jean M. Wong and teachers put together the 13 dance pieces – mostly adaptations from the classical ballet repertoire suited to the various levels of students.
The stage burst with colour and energy – dances range from tarantella and animals to adorable small ballerinas twirling around in picture-perfect tutus. Dancers were in the age range from 6 to 18. Lighting, set and costume designs complemented the vibrant stage. A notable piece by advance students choreographed by Carlos Valcarcel pushed the close of the first half into a climax – performers rose to professional standards in the style of George Balanchine.
Swan Lake Act III featured guests artists Fu Shu and Wang Zhi Wei, Principal Dancers of the Guangzhou Ballet Company. Fu, a National Grade I Performer, played the black swan Odile whose semblance to Odette lured Prince Siegfried, played by Wang. Both dancers demonstrated solid and academic techniques and acted as strong role models for the students.
Other top students who turned professional or are the recipients of the Tsinforn C. Wong Memorial Scholarship were also featured. These talents earned the opportunity to study Ballet professionally abroad. There are five Dame Margot Fonteyn Award recipients this year – three are in the English National Ballet School, one in the Hamburg School of Ballet and one in the Washington Ballet School. Evident is Principal and Artistic Director Jean M. Wong's high standards and determination to nurture talents in Classical Ballet.
The show was a celebration of the students' fruits of labour and a platform for them to enjoy the thrills of live performance. Most important, it trains our youth to become willing, confident and graceful artists.
