SEMINAR FOR YOUNG CRITICS
Stockholm, Sweden, 27 May - 2 June 2002
There will be a training seminar held in Stockholm in connection with a very important and provocative theatre season. The arrival date for the seminar is 27 May; the departure will be 2 June. It is organized by the Swedish section of the IATC and basically financed by the Swedish Foreign Ministry and its Institute for Cultural Exchanges.
The Season will include a very good choice of shows, including Ingmar Bergman's production of Ibsen's Ghosts, an Andromaque staged by Mats Ek, as well as Hamlet directed by Eimuntas Nekrosius. We hope to include a visit to the opera at the little 18th century Versailles-like theatre - Drottningholm - outside Stockholm, and we are also hoping to cater for other possible interests, such as theatre for young audiences or dance.
There will be places for 20 participants altogether, and
sessions will be conducted in English or in French. The monitors
will be Margareta Sorenson from Sweden, working for the Expressen
(Anglophone) and Hervˆm Guay from Quebec, Canada, working at
Quebec University in Montrˆmal and journal Le Devoir (Francophone).
Maria Helena Serodio, Director of Training Seminars, will
be in attendance as course director. Only one application
per Section will be considered initially, though there may
be places for a second candidate, preferably working in a
different language. Experience has shown that there are usually
more places available in the French-speaking group.
Accommodation for 6 nights will be paid for by our kind hosts, the Swedish section of the IATC, who will also look after all meals, theatre tickets and transportation during the stay (including from and to the airport or train station), and will do their best to help the group; excursions are planned to the artistic and historic sites of Stockholm.
The seminar is expected to take the form of morning discussions on the performances visited, as well as broader practical work on the nature of theatre criticism. Participants will be expected to write about what they have seen, in their own language, and talk about it, in the language of the group. They should also bring with them a one-page summary of the theatre scene in their own country, including a short summary of the state of theatre criticism, translated into either English or French, and be prepared to speak about it to the other seminar members.
Participating IATC young critics should be aged 35 or under, have at least one year's experience of writing published theatre criticism, and be able to cover the cost of their travel to and from Stockholm. It is understood that they will supply both the Organisers and IATC with copies of what they write about the week, when it is published.
